Summer Book Club

This summer, Rev. Debra will lead a monthly book discussion, addressing social justice related topics.  The format is different from a book study because you will read the book in its entirety and then join in a one session discussion.  A few copies of the books will be available in the bookstore and simple study guides are provided.  Register below for each group or at the table in the foyer.

Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson
Tuesday, July 15th at 10:30 AM and 6:30 PM via Zoom
Just Mercy is an unforgettable account of an idealistic, gifted young lawyer’s coming of age, a moving window into the lives of those he has defended, and an inspiring argument for compassion in the pursuit of true justice.  Bryan Stevenson is the founder and executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative, a human rights organization in Montgomery, Alabama. Under his leadership, EJI has won major legal challenges eliminating excessive and unfair sentencing, exonerating innocent death row prisoners, confronting abuse of the incarcerated and the mentally ill, and aiding children prosecuted as adults.

Solito by Javier Zamora
Tuesday, August 19th at 10:30 AM and 6:30 PM via Zoom
T
he book relates the author's three-thousand-mile journey from his small town in El Salvador, through Guatemala and Mexico, and across the U.S. border. He will leave behind his beloved aunt and grandparents to reunite with a mother who left four years ago and a father he barely remembers. Traveling alone amid a group of strangers and a “coyote” hired to lead them to safety, Javier expects his trip to last two short weeks. Solito provides an immediate and intimate account not only of a treacherous and near-impossible journey, but also of the miraculous kindness and love delivered at the most unexpected moments. It’s also the story of millions of others who had no choice but to leave home.
